As a rule of thumb in most Las Vegas poker rooms, you earn comp points or comp hours when you play in cash games but not in tournaments. The reasoning has been that keeping track of the bustouts in a tournament is just too cumbersome. Now it appears that some rooms are experimenting with a “flat rate” comp for each poker tournament.
Basically, there are two different formats being considered. The first would be a comp rate based on the tournament buy-in. If the room typically gives a $1 comp for every hour you play in a cash game, then the tournament comp might also be $1 for every $50 of tournament buy-in. The other more innovative suggestion is that you get a flat rate comp for a tournament but that rate goes up the more tournaments you play in that room each month; sort of a progressive comp program.
Comps are generally either a big deal to the individual poker player or of no consequence at all but as the competition for poker players continues to heat up in Las Vegas, we expect the “Poker Comp Wars” to heat up as well.
