At every casino in Las Vegas drinks are free. Sure by custom everyone tips the cocktail waitress but still drinks for one dollar is a pretty good deal. You can get the whole range of coffee drinks at the better casinos plus any beer, wine or hard liquor and, of course, non-alcoholic beverages. When you are seated at a poker table, you have an additional advantage; you get to see and hear what your opponents are drinking. You will know when the guy in seat four is on tilt or just drunk and giving away his money.
There are local poker players who only play the big Strip poker rooms on weekend nights, when the weekend drinkers are fully inebriated. I was talking earlier this week with a player who normally plays during the week at one of the outlying “locals” cardrooms, but on the weekends he goes to the strip on Friday and Saturday night at midnight and finds the no-limit table with the most drunks. He claims that 50% of his poker winnings come from those two nights and that if it’s a really good weekend; he takes the rest of the week off.
If you are wisely not going to drink and play at the same time, then at the end of the evening we have a suggestion, either order your nightcap during your last round at the table or find the nearby Video Poker Bar. All the casinos have such bars; the video poker machines are built right into the top of the bar and as long as you are playing the drinks are free. The big advantage is that the machines don’t care if you drink and they never bluff. So order up at the Video Poker Bar and don’t forget to tip the bartender.
