Freerolls are a popular poker room attraction, however the once a month events often exclude the large tourist population. The poker room at the Luxor has come up with a unique format to overcome that problem and they have create a new hybrid event which combines the cash game with the tournament freeroll format.
The qualifying period to play for a $3,500 prize pool is only one day; this is perfect for everyone from the Las Vegas local to the tourists who are only in for a short time. The “coupon” tournaments take place every Wednesday and Sunday. To qualify for the Wednesday tournament, players must log at least six hours between 9 a.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Wednesday in a cash game. Six hours are also required to gain entry into the Sunday tournament, but they need to be logged between 9 a.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Both freerolls run from 16:00. to 19:00. What is different about these tournaments is that they are really cash games that feature tournament payouts, as well. Players who qualify for a tournament sit in a normal $2-$4 limit Hold’em cash game, but in addition to winning (or losing) money through play, the goal is to accumulate coupons which are earned with every $30-plus pot won. At the end of the designated three hours of play, the players are awarded tournament payouts for the most coupons.
The payouts for this freeroll are:
1. $375
2. $350
3. $325
4. $300
The remaining money in the prize pool is split among the other players.
There is also a standard weekly freeroll tournament that requires 15 hours of cash-game play. The weekly freeroll takes place every Tuesday. The prize pool is $3,000 and is played in a freezeout style.
